Dig deep

Happy New Year! I hope you all had wonderful celebrations and are looking forward to 2018 with great expectations.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I LOVE to read. You know how they say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach? Well for me that would read, “The way to Stephanie’s heart is through a book.” My family knows this all too well!

I keep track of the books I read on the Goodreads app. One of the things I like about this app is the ability to set a yearly reading goal. My goal for 2017 was 30 books and as of yesterday, I was one book short. Seeing as I was sick, I figured I could dedicate the day to finishing one more book. I chose to make my last book of the year one that I had been muddling through since March: The Broken Way by Ann Voskamp. This book is full of beautiful insights, but for me, reading this required time and an open heart. It was not always a pleasant, breezy read. It was a challenge, a confirmation and a comfort.

As I look to the year ahead, three overlapping messages seem to be imprinting themselves on my heart.

  • Let go and leave room for grace.
  • Live love.
  • Press on.

If any of these messages strike a chord with you, I would encourage you to read The Broken Way and watch the movie ‘Amazing Grace.’ See if you can’t feel the heartbeat of God speaking to you through these stories.

Don’t let this year be another one of settling for the ordinary. Move forward into the extraordinary.

This quote struck me with such a force that it has stayed with me for years:

Why is it you only feel the thorns in your feet when you stop running?

– William Pitt (in the film “Amazing Grace”)

So take a lesson from William Pitt- when life gets tough, keep going. Don’t walk, run towards the goal or dream God has placed inside of you. We could use a few William Pitts in this world.
